”The Real Capital Of Ireland”
Cork is an amazingly beautiful city with colourful architecture, Pubs, Shops and waterways. Corkonians refer to it as the “real capital of Ireland” and as the “rebel City”. The nicknames are reference to the city’s role in opposing the Anglo-Irish Treaty during the Irish Civil War (“Real Capital”) as well as their support for the Yorkist during the Wars of the Roses (“Rebel City”).
The city was expanded by Vikings and used to be completely walled. You can still see the remnants of the old medieval centre of the town. Cork also has one of the largest natural harbours in the world by navigational area and was the European Capital of Culture in 2005, 2009 as well as on the Lonely Planet’s top 10 “Best in Travel 2010”. It is described in many ways and having visited it myself, I would describe it as vibrant, diverse, multicultural and both modern and historic.
