Choosing the Right Career: exploring opportunities in customer support, sales and beyond!

Are you looking for your first role? Or maybe you're looking for a new professional adventure but find yourself lost in the myriad of options? The quest for the right job can be both exciting and daunting. I've created a guide to help you navigate and land the ideal role that aligns with your skills, aspirations, and interests. 🧭

1) Self-Assessment:

Start by evaluating your skills, strengths, and interests. What are you passionate about? Identify your key skills and match them with roles that resonate with your ambitions.

A few websites to help you:

  1. 🔗 Princeton Review Career Quiz: A short quiz to evaluate interests and preferences for potential career choices. Link

  2. 🔗 MyNextMove: Offers a free online tool called "O*NET Interest Profiler" to assess interests and match them with careers. Link

  3. 🔗 CareerExplorer: Provides a free career test that assesses interests, personality, and skills to suggest suitable career paths. Link

If the result doesn't match your expectations it's ok! See it as something to explore. Maybe you could combine your current role with your aspirations and dreams. For example, if you love the IT field, you could talk about it to your manager and see if you could get extra training or support on some IT Tasks. Maybe you need to start from zero, and that's ok too!

2) Research and Exploration:

You now have a general idea of what you like, it's time to dive into some research about various jobs. Stay open-minded, if you're passionate about a field but lack a diploma, consider starting in an entry-level role. You can progress toward your goals from there.

If you like Fashion for example but do not have the necessary diplomas, you could look into it within Customer Support or sales maybe within the Fashion Industry. Understand the responsibilities, required skills, and potential career growth associated with each role.

Some areas of research:

➡ LinkedIn Utilize LinkedIn's job postings and company profiles to explore job roles, responsibilities, required skills, and potential growth opportunities. Follow industry leaders and join relevant groups for insights.

Glassdoor: Explore company reviews, job descriptions, and salary information to gain a comprehensive understanding of job roles in different companies.

Indeedor Monster: Search for job listings in Customer Support, Sales, or related fields. Read through job descriptions to understand the specific responsibilities and skill requirements for each role.

3) Networking and Insights:

Engage with professionals already doing the job you could be interested in 💼. Take an interest in their career path, which can be just as complex as yours. Look at their profile, attend industry events, join relevant LinkedIn groups, and network with individuals who can provide insights into the day-to-day realities of these roles. You'll probably be surprised to discover aspects of the job you weren't expecting.

4) Training and Skill Enhancement:

Identify any skill gaps and invest in training or certifications to enhance your qualifications.

Here are a few examples of websites that offer training and skill enhancement:

  1. Coursera(www.coursera.org): Offers online courses from universities and institutions covering various subjects, including business, technology, data science, and more.

  2. Udemy(www.udemy.com): Provides a platform for individual instructors to create and offer courses on a wide range of topics, from programming to photography and personal development.

  3. LinkedIn(www.linkedin.com/learning): Offers a vast library of courses on business, creative, and technology skills taught by industry experts.

  4. Skillshare(www.skillshare.com): Features thousands of classes in design, business, technology, and more, taught by professionals.

5) Job Shadowing or Internships:

If possible, seek opportunities for job shadowing or internships to gain firsthand experience in the roles you’re interested in. This can provide invaluable insights and help you make informed decisions.

6) Company Culture and Values:

You now have a clearer idea of the job you'd like to do - well done! But you should also consider the culture and values of potential employers. A company’s culture greatly impacts job satisfaction. Research their mission, values, and work environment to ensure alignment with your principles.

Does the company encourage internal progression? Does it offer training opportunities recognized by other companies? If you wish to join one company, why not contact a few people already working there to have a better insight? 😊

The job landscape evolves rapidly. Be adaptable and open to learning. Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing roles or responsibilities can be beneficial in the long run.

➡ Remember, the key to finding the right job is not just about the job title but also about how well it matches your skills, interests, and long-term career goals. Take the time to explore, research, and assess each opportunity thoroughly.
