Three Months in Málaga: What Living Abroad Taught Me

The past three months felt like a dream that I’m slowly waking up from. I moved to Málaga to complete a marketing internship for my degree, and I can confidently tell you it was the best decision I ever made.

Moving abroad didn’t just mean that I was doing an internship in a foreign country, it meant moving out of my family home for the very first time. It still feels surreal, I barely remember what life was like before this whole experience. I didn’t just gain professional skills, I have grown so much as a person and I wouldn’t trade this journey for the world.

Independence

Living at home meant for me that I could rely on my parents for everything, but there comes a point in your life when it’s time to grow up. Since I’m graduating soon, this new sense of independence couldn’t have come at a better time. Moving to a whole new country meant it was just me, my suitcase and, in my case: my fiancé, who also had no experience living on his own.

It taught us that figuring things out on your own, isn’t as difficult as it seems. You are forced to find your way in a completely new city, hunt down the best deals (and the best food), and communicate with people who don’t speak your language.

¿Hablas español?

The most difficult – but also the most fun - part of it all was learning a new language. Talking to people in their native language really is the best way to learn, especially when they don’t speak any English. I wouldn’t call myself fluent (three months is too short for that), but my Spanish definitely improved. I plan on continuing to learn and am determined to become a true Hispanophone someday.

Mrs. Worldwide

I ended up at a company filled with people from all over the world. That meant I didn’t just experience Spanish culture, I also connected with people and their habits from across Europe.

This helped me grow as a marketeer and reminded me that not all content works everywhere. I received feedback and perspectives from people with very different backgrounds, which was incredibly valuable for my professional development.

A new perspective

I always thought moving abroad was something only really wealthy people could do. I never imagined it would be within reach for me. But working for Worldwiders showed me that packing up your things and starting fresh in a different country isn’t as expensive or impossible as I once thought, especially with so many companies offering relocation support.

I’m not going to lie, starting this whole journey scared the life out of me. I’m an anxious person, very set in my own little routines and world. But I would do it all again in a heartbeat. Even longer, if I could. I can’t recommend the experience enough.

Thank you, Worldwiders, for giving me this opportunity and for everything I’ve learned along the way!
