A Weekend in Málaga: Insider Tips

Málaga is one of those cities that perfectly blends history, culture, sunshine, and a laid-back beach vibe. Living here, I’ve discovered some of my favorite spots to explore, eat, and enjoy the city. Here is a weekend guide to make the most out of your stay.

Stroll Through the Historic Centro Historico

Start your weekend with a walk through Málaga’s historic center. The streets are full of charm, with pretty buildings, small plazas, and plenty of cafés to stop at for a coffee. Don’t miss the stunning Málaga Cathedral, an architectural gem.

Just nearby is the Roman Theatre, which you can visit to step back in time and imagine life in ancient Málaga. From there, if you feel like stretching your legs, head up to Mirador de Gibralfaro. The view over the city and port is absolutely breathtaking, perfect for a photo or just soaking in the cityscape.

Beach Time and Rooftop Drinks

No trip to Málaga is complete without some time at the beach. Malagueta Beach is the perfect spot to enjoy the sun, dip your toes in the Mediterranean, and relax. After a sun-soaked afternoon, head to AC Hotel’s rooftop bar near the port for a refreshing cocktail and panoramic views of the harbor, it’s one of my favorite spots to watch the city sparkle as the sun sets.

Day Trip to Nerja

If you have extra time, a short trip to the nearby town of Nerja is highly recommended. Known for its crystal-clear beaches and charming streets, it’s a beautiful coastal town just a short drive from Málaga. Perfect for a beach day.

Shopping in Málaga

For those looking to shop, Málaga has options for every style. Calle Marqués de Larios in the city center is great for strolling and window shopping. If you’re looking for bargains, Plaza Mayor Designer Outlet near the airport has a wide range of brands at discounted prices. For a more traditional shopping mall experience, Larios Centro is also right in the city.

Where to Eat

Food in Málaga is as vibrant as the city itself. Some of my favorite restaurants include:

  • La Tranca – for lively tapas and a fun atmosphere

  • Casa Lola – classic Spanish dishes done right

  • La +Fría – casual and fresh, great for sharing plates

  • Gusto – perfect for Italian-inspired meals

Sunset with a View

To end your day, I highly recommend a short hike up Monte Victoria. Not only is it a fun little adventure, but the sunset views over Málaga are truly spectacular. It’s a quieter, more local spot to watch the day turn into night.

Insider Tips:

  • Wear comfortable shoes for the city strolls and the hike.

  • Bring sunscreen and a hat for the beach and rooftop drinks.

  • Try to catch the sunset from either the AC Hotel rooftop or Monte Victoria, it’s unbeatable.

Whether you’re wandering the historic streets, enjoying the beaches, shopping, or indulging in the local food scene, Málaga has a way of making every weekend feel like a mini-vacation.
